The American Express Airpoints Platinum Card is one of the most rewarding Airpoints cards on the market, delivering benefits like the highest Airpoints Dollar earn rate on everyday spend, four airport lounge entries each year, discounted Koru membership and complimentary travel insurance – all for a modest $195 annual fee.

If you’re a new Amex Card Member you can also pick up 200 bonus Airpoints Dollars when you apply, are approved and spend $1,500 on your new card in the first 3 months. That’s worth $200 of spend with Air New Zealand.

Here’s an overview of the card benefits you can enjoy, with more details and an application form available on Amex’s website, here.

1. Earn piles of Airpoints Dollars on everyday spend

You’ll turbocharge your Airpoints account by earning 1 Airpoints Dollar for every $59 of spend: the fastest earn rate on everyday purchases in New Zealand.

1 Airpoints Dollar converts to $1 of spend with Air New Zealand, which you can use to pay for flights, car hire, Koru membership or purchases at the Airpoints Store.

With a large and growing network of merchants accepting Amex in New Zealand, there’s no shortage of places where you can use your card.

There’s also no cap on the amount of Airpoints Dollars you can earn.

2. Enjoy four airport lounge entries each year

Relax before your next flight in style, even if you’re flying economy.

Each year, you’ll receive two complimentary passes to a Priority Pass lounge. Priority Pass operates the world’s biggest lounge network, with over 1,200 lounges globally.

In New Zealand, this includes the Strata Lounge in Auckland (previously known as the Emperor Lounge) and the Manaia Lounges in Christchurch and Queenstown.

Relax in the lounge before you fly

In addition, you’ll get two entries each year to the American Express Lounge at Sydney Airport international or Melbourne Airport international.

We’d value these lounge entries at over $50 each, so there’s easily more than $200 of value here each year.

3. Save big on Koru membership

Air New Zealand’s Koru programme offers a range of benefits when flying with Air New Zealand and partner airlines, including lounge access, a higher baggage allowance, and priority check-in and boarding.

With your American Express Airpoints Platinum Card, you’ll get $145 off the annual Koru membership fee, which drops from $629 to $484 for so long as you hold the card.

If you’re not yet a Koru member and would like to join, the $255 joining fee will also be waived, saving you a total of $400 in the first year.

4. Attain elite status faster with Air New Zealand

You’ll get a fast track to elite status with Air New Zealand by earning 1 status point for every $250 of spend on your card: a very valuable perk for frequent flyers chasing status.

You need 450 status points to reach silver in the first year (405 points to keep it in subsequent years) or 900 points to reach gold (810 to keep it in subsequent years), and up to half of these points can come from card spend.

For the highest “Elite” tier, you need 1500 status points in the first year (600 can be from card spend) and 1350 points in subsequent years (540 can be from card spend).

The higher your status, the more benefits you enjoy – like two annual Air New Zealand lounge entries and a complimentary upgrade as a silver member, or unlimited access to Air New Zealand and partner lounges and two annual complimentary upgrades when you reach gold.

5. Save money with a range of valuable insurance covers

You’ll receive complimentary domestic and international travel insurance cover for you, your partner and dependent children under the age of 22 when you pay for travel with your card or use Airpoints Dollars to book.

The comprehensive cover includes medical emergency, trip cancellation, travel delay and baggage-related costs, as well as many other expenses, and can save you a lot of money if you’re currently paying for travel insurance.

You’ll also receive smartphone screen insurance when you pay for your phone or monthly contract with your card, with $500 available for repairs up to 2 times every 12 months (with a 10% excess).

And for good measure, you’ll also get purchase protection cover for any eligible items purchased with your card that are damaged or stolen within 90 days of purchase.

6. Earn more points, save money and enjoy a range of lifestyle benefits

There are many more perks to enjoy with this card, including:

  • free additional cards for family members – an easy way for your household to earn points faster
